Cover Dutch oven and bury in coals of campflre or bake in oven at low heat for 6 to 8 hours

If necessary, add more liquid as beans bake. For smoky flavor: If you have a covered grill, you can cook the last 2 or 3 hours on grill

Just uncover beans and toss hickory or mesquite chips on coals

- 2 cups dry navy beans
- 1-1/2 quarts cold water

- 1/4 pound salt pork, diced
- 1-1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1 /2 teaspoon dry mustard
- 1/4 cup granulated or brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons molasses
- 1 small onion, quartered
