Preheat oven to 350 degrees F

In a medium bowl, cream butter or margarine with brown sugar and granulated sugar

Add egg and beat well

Coat fruit and nuts with 1/4 cup flour

Set aside

In a medium bowl, sift together remaining flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt

In a small bowl, mix orange peel, dates and pecans with reserved 1/4 cup flour. Alternately add sifted flour mixture and orange juice to egg mixture

Beat until blended

Stir in fruit-nut mixture

Pour into greased and floured 9 x 5 loaf pan

Bake in preheated oven in loaf pan 40 to 50 minutes or in square pan 25 to 30 min- utes

Cool 5 minutes in pan

Remove from pan and cool completely on a cooling rack

Makes 1 large or 2 small loaves.
ORANGE DATE LOAF

- 1/4 cup butter or margarine
- 1/3 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup whole wheat flour
- 1 tsp. each baking powder and baking soda
- 3/4 tsp. salt
- 1 TB grated orange peel
- 1 cup strained fresh orange juice
- 1 cup chopped dates (8 oz.)
- 1/2 cup coarsely chopped pecans
